Resident Jennie van Dyk says this is now becoming a regular occurrence and it seems like the residents will have to start keeping cans of water on hand.
“What must we do to ensure that we have water and services due to us, something that we pay through our noses for?” asks van Dyk.
Metro spokesman Sam Modiba says the metro is currently faced with a problem with the 150mm diameter asbestos pipeline coming from G Brown going down in Lake Road for approximately 120m to 150m.
Van Dyk adds every time a pipe bursts they just fix that small part and she thinks that when the water gets turned back on, the water pressure corrodes the rest of the pipe further which leads to the next section bursting.
“The line in question is feeding most of Strubenvale and also Horses Head, so if a burst occurs, we need to shut off the water supply which affects the areas mentioned,” adds Modiba.
But residents argue when the metro fixes the burst pipes they should simply fix the entire section of piping, as this will avoid the inconvenience.
Modiba concludes the pipe is old and needs replacement soon.
A resident in Fourth Avenue Welgedacht, noticed water running into his yard early thison Monday morning.
Upon investigation he noticed a huge water leak in front of his house.
Elias Kamffer contacted the metro at 6am on Monday morning but by the time the paper went to press the leak had yet to be fixed.
The water was running down Fourth venue into Evans Road around the corner.
“This is the second major water leak in two weeks,” says Kamffer.
He adds the metro needs to look at the old pipes and have them repaired as a lot of clean water is going to waste.
Ward councilor Dean Stone has asked that, in the interested of this matter being sorted out, the residents sign a petition which he will then hand over to the council.
“I will set up the petition if someone from Strubenvalle can contact me please Clr Dean Stone 0828064584.”
The Addie readers were asked on Facebook what their feelings about the water issues in the area are. This is what they have to say:
- Ben Lindeque: ince the have installed the new water meters the pressure is not what it used to be.
- Elmarie Louw: Its frustating really
- Andre Steyn: Water pressure is up and down. It is an inconvenience sometimes.
- Lisa-Marie Nel: The low water pressure is so frustrating not to talk about the water interruptions. They aren’t very quick to fix the problems but very quick to send out final notices wrongfully and then you have to go there to go fix it. You get told three days, just to get another final notice the next month. Not to talk about street lights that I’ve gone as far as reporting it via someone that works for them and its been months now and its still not fixed.
- Magda Burke: Its frustrating! Takes ages to draw a bath and to do the washing. Mondays are already a test of patience, why add this on top of all the rest of my Monday blues. Seriously, can something please be done?
- Zelda Boshoff: I was wondering this weekend what is going on? Small streams of water pouring out, why can anyone explain? Where lies the real problem now? I am fed up with this incompetent service that we have to pay for!
- Diane Smit: I have reported this problem nine times from July 9 to date, I must say the response I have received from Ekurhuleni has been prompt, I see they have now removed the new meter? They replaced a piece of the underground pipe, but the parks department is useless, the massive stump is still on the pavement, right opposite Strubenvale Primary in Sutherland Ave.
