Trenches on both sides of the road have been a cause for concern to many motorists driving past there on a daily basis.
A regular Grootvaly Road user, Kobus Meintjies’s concern is that rain may cause the road to cave in due to the weight of the 32ton trucks using the road.
“It must be noted that the said excavation does not have effect on the road,” says metro spokesman Sam Modiba.
Kobus says the instalment of sewer and water pipes should be prioritised, as nature might take its course with the road, leaving a damaged road and maybe a serious accident.
Modiba adds his department inspects the sight often to see if the excavation is done according to the conditions of the approved way-leave.
The plastic barriers are there to warn motorists of the trench, but another concern for Meintjies is the ground might move and the barriers will no longer serve there purpose.
