Dog attacks mother and daughter
Two people with their two dogs have been attacked by a boerboel.
While taking their two Jack Russels for a walk in the park, the Sandra and her daughter Melissa Terblanche were attacked by a neighbour’s boerboel.
Sandra and Melissa took their dogs for a walk last Monday afternoon and when they returned they noticed the neighbour’s front gate was open.
They immediately picked up their dogs and turned around to open their gate, but it was too late as the neighbour’s dog had already noticed them.
“When I noticed the big dog, I turned around to protect Trixie from being bitten, but the dog jumped up and bit me on my arm,” says Melissa.
She somehow landed on the ground, still trying to protect her dog, when she was bitten on the forehead.
Her mother Sandra tried to get the big dog off her daughter and the dog bit her as well.
“When I got up, I noticed my mother was lying on the ground with an open wound on her wrist,” Melissa adds.
The neighbour ran out to their rescue and called the dog off them.
“He was very helpful, and also paid for our after-hours fee at the hospital.
“We appreciate his assistance, but I still have to report this to the police, not to report the owner of the dog, but for insurance purposes,” says Sandra.
Both Jack Russels, Japsnoet and Trixie, were bitten by the boerboel and were taken to a vetenary hospital for treatment and are doing well.
Melissa got stitches on her forehead and Sandra’s arm was stitched up as well, but she was admitted to hospital and stayed there until Sunday when she was discharged.
Her advice to residents is to be vigilant when they walk on the streets or take their dogs out for a walk.
“I personally feel dangerous dogs should be kept safe at the back of their owners’ yards during the day,” she adds.
She adds dogs are there to protect the owners, but then owners should prevent their dogs from jumping fences and should keep their gates locked.
“I will not walk in the streets with my dogs again, it is just not safe any more,” says Sandra.
