Soprano visits JJ

Pretty Yende, internationally acclaimed young South African soprano, visited Dr Johan Jurgens High School last Wednesday.

She addressed the school assembly, inspiring the learners with the message that one should never give up on one’s dream.

Pretty urged the learners to pursue their dreams, warning them that such a quest entails hard work and perseverance.

“After her talk, all shouted that she must sing something,” says department head for science Frina du Toit,

She warned the learners that her voice was not warmed up, but then gave the learners another pointer on the responsibility that comes with success, saying that sometimes you have to deliver just to meet the audience’s expectations.

She sang the first few phrases of the well-known aria O mio babbino caro from Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi.

Pretty concluded by saying that one must not be afraid to stand out in order to pursue your dream.

After rapturous applause from the learners, the vice president of the executive council Delisile Mtsweni, handed over a bunch of flowers.

Pretty was promptly mobbed by learners asking for her autograph, and wanting to be photographed with her.

Frina says Pretty patiently responded to their requests, maintaining her infectious smile, showing her to be a worthy ambassador for South Africa, and indeed a role model for all the learners at the school.
