The incident took place at Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement on Friday.
Captain Johannes Ramphora of the Springs police says the three armed robbers stormed into one of the shacks, demanding cash and cell phones from the frightened family members who were with their friends during the incident.
He says the motorist who was passing by, came to the victims’ rescue when he jumped out from his car to confront the robbers.
“Two of the robbers jumped the railway line and ran towards Bakerton while the deceased ran towards the other shack to seek for cover,” says Ramphora.
Adding that residents chased after him and was caught, beaten and stoned until he died.
“The police and ambulance were called into the scene and the paramedics declared him dead on the scene,” adds Ramphora.
The police are still looking for the two suspects and a case of murder and house robbery were opened.
