The atmosphere was filled with laughter and excitement among Vita Nova residents and four primary schools’ children at the annual fun day held at Vita Nova on Saturday.
Members of the staff of Vita Nova showed off their line dancing skills to songs, including Pretty Belinda, Boogie Shoes and many more, much to the enjoyment of the spectators.
Pinegrove Primary School, Selpark Primary School, Strubenvale Primary School and Veritas Preparatory School contributed to the exciting events on the day.
According to the director of Vita Nova Michelle Immelman, the day is held to raise funds, but also about awareness and for the learners to mix with the residents.
The schools and residents are divided into teams and take part accordingly.
The Impala team victoriously won with 101 points with the Eland team in a close second position with 99 points.
But the Kudu and Springsbok teams will practice their skills and take them on again next year.
“Although there are winners and losers, everyone is a winner,” said Michelle, “as each individual received a medal.”
The teachers of the participating schools agree that the fun day is to raise awareness, to support other people and to teach the children that although these residents are disabled they can still have fun.
Veritas teacher Lerator Nkosi says the children are being made aware of how disabled people live.“By giving back to the community the children also learn disabled people can also have fun,” said Strubenvale Primary School teacher Jabu Nkosi.
Liam Winter from Pinegrove primary said more teachers should get involved while Selpark primary teacher Shaun Mons said they teach the children to support their community.
The item the schoolchildren enjoyed most was the dance-off between Keagen Jooste from Strubenvale Primary School and Pinegrove Primary School’s Jessica Mohlala.
Jessica was all smiles when she received her R200 prize money.
At prizegiving the winning teams received their trophies and each participant received a medal.
