People who care

SpringsCare Cancer Care really cares about cancer patients.

Ashley van Wyk is embracing the opportunity to care for cancer patients.

She and eight other people are part of the SpringsCare Cancer Care project.

This project is currently part of the Selcourt Methodist Church in Lodeyko’s 4C Christian Community Counselling Centre.

“It is vastly growing to become a project on its own,” says Ashley.

She claims Peter Rundl was the founder of Cancer Care in 2010, but died on December 2012.

After his death everything came to a stand still and Ashley saw the opportunity to rekindle Cancer Care and relaunch the project.

Being programme manager means a lot to her, however, she says it is not a job, but her passion.

“Part of our job is to make the lives of those patients on our list as comfortable as possible,” she says.

The Cancer Care group’s main aim is to love and assist cancer patients and give counselling where needed.

At the moment they have quite a few patients which they support by giving them books to read, food and clothes.

When a new patient joins the group, they are given a gift bag containing all sorts of comforting ‘tools’ including a beanie, a motivation book and many more.

“This is at no cost to anybody,” she adds.

Ashley’s mother Sylvia Wiggill is her role model.

She claims her mother taught them how to love and give without boundaries.

She says she is passionate about a person who is not a space to help them.

“I will always be grateful to my parents who also taught me to have a relationship with God.”

Being such a busy body, she has a problem as she does not know how to relax.

But she escapes for her busy world by reading Christian novels before she goes to sleep.

Her message to families and friends of cancer patients are to contact them on 081 862 9550 for support.
