IEC ballot box found in Welgedacht Road

Problem might not be solved before results are made public

A sealed special voter’s ballot box fell off a bakkie driving along Welgedacht Road towards Springs on Monday.

A man, who wished to stay anonymous, picked up the box and took it home with him.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the man only handed the sealed box in at the Springs Police Station at 8pm, on Wednesday.

The ballot box is believed to be from ward 88.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was informed of the incident.

A docket was opened for contravening the electoral act.

It is not sure if the special votes will be counted in time before the results will be announced.

“Fingerprints were taken and the case is under investigation,” says Ramphora.

At the time of publishing, the IEC had not collected the box which  is still at the police station for safekeeping.

The IEC spokesman was not available for comment when the Addie called the IEC offices.
