Metro police officer killed

Fatal injuries caused by an accident cost an EMPD officer his life.

An accident left an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer dead on the side of the road in Kingsway this morning.

The incident took place at about 5.45am, while the officer was doing speed checks on Kingsway Road.

Superintendent Vusi Mabanga, EMPD spokesman, says the driver of a VW Jetta sedan failed to stop as directed by the officer and ran over the officer.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman, says the officer sustained fatal injuries during the collision and was declared dead on the scene.

He adds the driver of the Jetta was not injured.

Meiring says the paramedics were told that the vehicle in question had apparently driven through a protest crowd and into the officer.

Captain Mack Mngomezulu, Actonville police spokesman, says the protest allegations are not true.

“The robot  between Lindelani and the Kingsway  is a very busy intersection and the officer was on normal duty to control early morning traffic,” adds Mngomezulu.

The road was closed for three hours to allow emergency services to complete formalities.

Mabanga says the deceased was a long serving member of the EMPD.

He adds an investigation by the EMPD’s Accident Reconstruction Unit has commenced to compile an accurate and detailed report on the cause of the accident.

A culpable homicide case has been opened at the Benoni Police Station.
