Cancer support group raises funds

Several woman came together on Saturday in support of the Wings of Hope Cancer Support.

This day is marked as a fundraising day for the support group and the event was held at the Huis van Vrede Kerk in New State Area. Springsites Jacques and Annetjie Janse van Rensburg entertained the women with their beautiful voices and messages of hope.

Naomi Chapman, a breast cancer survivor, invited Sheena Williamson, who runs the East Rand branch of the support group, to show her how supportive Springs residents are of cancer survivors.

Sheena, also a breast cancer survivor, said she has been involved in the organisation for nine years and it started with a couple of women who had breast cancer.

The support group is now open to both genders and provides support in means of phone calls, support to families of the patients as well as transport to and from the different hospitals where they undergo treatment.

The main organisation is situated in Johannesburg.

With a R9 000 contribution, Sheena says the money will go to anybody who needs it.

She made it clear that they do not support patients by paying for their treatment, as it has become preposterous.

“We try to support them with other things where necessary,” she concludes.
