Sewage leaks all over Springs

A factory owner from the New Era area is fed up with a sewage leak overflowing on his property.

Seeping through the foundation of the factory, Rob Burchell is worried that it might cause damage to the factory.

He has contacted the municipality on multiple occasions, only getting a reference number each time.

Rob has many factory workers and is concerned for the sake of their health, as this can be a health risk for many as it is not merely water running out, but effluent as well.

When he got in contact with Ekurhuleni, he said that he is left with no choice but to pump the effluent into the main road (South Main Road), Ekurhuleni allegedly responded that he should continue pumping the sewage into the main road, which is, in fact, illegal.

He has been made aware that the cause of this leak is not on his property, but 2 km down the road where sewage pipes are blocked.

Themba Gadebe, from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, told the Addie that the sewer blockage in New Era has been attended to and is now open and that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality removed rocks and stones from the manholes in the veld in New Era on Saturday and Sunday.

At the time of going to print, the Addie has not received response on the matter of pumping effluent into the main road.

Sarel Heaney from Daggafontein has also been dealing with a major sewage leak that was flooding his backyard for over six months.

He has already spent over R38 000 to fix this problem, but it persisted.

He has contacted Ekurhuleni almost daily for the past six months, but says that he only keeps getting a reference number and that nothing has been done about the situation.

His retired in-laws currently live on the property and they were fed up of the stench that plagued both the yard and the inside of the house.

The Addie sent inquiries to Ekurhuleni, and on following up on Monday, was told by Sarel that they have fixed the problem and was, at the time, busy cleaning up.
