Hospital did not treat man, says family

He was taken by ambulance to the hospital on July 12 after being in a motor accident.

A woman’s disgust with the Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) was refuted by the hospital’s spokesman.

Leticia van der Walt says her brother-in-law, Willem Viljoen was taken by ambulance to the hospital on July 12 after being in a motor accident.

He had a femur fracture and a laceration on his face.

Van der Walt says they were immediately helped by the personnel in the emergency ward, but the nursing staff in the ward he was sent to, did not help him.

The next day the family took some bedding for him, because he was still lying on a spine board, as he was taken from emergency to the the ward.

Willem was not cleaned, as he still had grass, soil and blood on him.

No-one attended to his wounds or broken leg nor gave him water.

The next day he had nothing to kill the pain and the drip he had on his arm leaked at the connection.

Hendrik Buda, communications manager of FERH confirmed Viljoen, arrived by ambulance at the hospital on July 12 by 10.37pm.

He was accompanied by his wife.

“On arrival he was seen by the casualty doctor who ordered x-rays and treatment immediately.”

Viljoen was admitted to the ward where the orthopaedic doctor ordered that he had to be operated upon.

He was then washed and prepared for the operating theatre.

Buda says Viljoen was discharged in a stable condition on July 20 and was requested to return after two weeks to the orthopaedic out-patients clinic.
