Between August 17 and 30, EMPD officers responded to several accidents throughout the region, the majority of which were fatal.

According to the EMPD, a male passenger died on August 20 after a head-on collision between two motor vehicles. The accident took place along Old Pretoria Road in the Esselen Park area.

On the R24 freeway, direction east by OR Tambo offramp, in the Kempton Park area, a male motorcyclist is believed to have lost control of the bike and succumbed to his injuries.

On August 22 in the Katlehong area, at the corner of Vlakplaas Street and the R103, a male driver died after his vehicle overturned.

On the same day, a female pedestrian died after she was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident an the intersection of M7\K146 and Phakathi in Thokoza.

In the Alberton area on August 25, along Swartkopies Road between Poets and Venter streets, a male driver succumbed to his injuries after his vehicle lost control and crashed into a tree.

On August 29, at the corner of Laris and Mooke streets in Daveyton, two passengers died after the Volkswagen Golf in which they were travelling overturned.

The EMPD voiced concern about the high number of fatal crashes.

“We are advising pedestrians that when travelling in the dark they must wear bright and reflective clothing and avoid crossing highways or walking on freeways,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepe.

“We urge drivers not to operate a motor vehicle whilst they are tired, not to drive while they are under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substances, and passengers can report reckless driving by dialling 112 on their cellphone and report the matter to law enforcer with full details.”
