Shaft still poses threat

The open mine shaft in Gugulethu (Springs Advertiser, July 17) is still open with seemingly no chance of being closed.

Ward councillor, Ramesh Sheodin no one is willing to take responsibility for closing the shaft in.

“Neither the mining companies nor the municipality feel it is their responsibility,” says Sheodin.

The shaft was covered with concrete and steel a few years ago, but these materials were broken up by people to remove the steel.

“Everyone feels that covering it again with steel will result in it being stolen again,” adds Sheodin, “and in the meantime, that open mine shaft is still endangering the lives of children who play around it.”

The Addie has sent enquiries to Ekurhuleni but had not received feedback at the time of going to print.
