He returned home from work and when he opened the gate at 5.10pm, his neighbour shouted at him that there were robbers on his premises.
Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says the man saw two alleged robbers jumping the fence.
He chased after them and allegedly shot one in his right hand and caught up with him.
The police arrived on the scene and called the ambulance.
The injured alleged robber was taken to a nearby hospital where he will be under police guard until he is discharged.
Ramphora says the man noticed a leather jacket, watch and camera were missing from the house.
A case of house break-in and theft was opened at the Springs Police Station.
Hendrik Buda, spokesman for the Far East Rand, confirmed the man is still in the hospital and under police guard.
