Sewage flows freely into Blesbokspruit
This spewing sewer is only part of the Slovo Park community's problems.
An overflowing sewage manhole, 100 metres from the homes in Slovo Park, is polluting Blesbokspruit with raw sewage.
On the one side of this manhole are Slovo Park’s homes and the stream of Blesbokspruit is on the other side.
The sewage water has already forged a stream towards Blesbokspruit, with various types of birds feasting on the dirt.
Patrick Ganda, one of the residents, says this manhole has been overflowing for five months.
He says Ekurhuleni has ignored their requests to fix the problem.
They contacted the ward councillor for Slovo Park numerous times and also produced a petition from the community of Slovo Park to Ekurhuleni Metro.
This petition was submitted in September to the office of the speaker of Ekurhuleni.
Ganda says as the weather gets warmer, the stench of the sewage gets unbearable to all the residents of Slovo Park.
He is also worried about the effect the pollution will have on Blesbokspruit.
Ganda says this spewing sewer is only part of the Slovo Park community’s problems.
They also have problems with the RDP houses that have no privacy inside and outside, poor reading of water meters, flooding of Blesbokspruit during heavy rains and no stormwater management, poor service delivery and no library nor a park for the children.
* The Addie did request the Ekurhuleni Metro for comment, but at the time of going to the press has not received anything yet.
