Dog rescued from open manhole

A poodle was rescued from a manhole in Nigel Road on Tuesday January 13.

Charné Denysschen (21) from Selection Park and her father Fanie (55) rescued a trapped poodle that fell into an open manhole.

Charné and Fanie discovered the dog after a passerby called them and alerted them about the matter.

“I think he thought the dog was one of ours,” says Charné.

Fanie protected his hands from the sewer waste by using plastic bags as gloves and hoisted the dog out by grabbing onto the skin at the back of its neck.

“It had a blue collar around its neck, but there wasn’t a tag,” she says.

“Now he’s just walking around here with our other dogs.”

She says they’ve been contacting Ekurhuleni for over two years to cover the manhole, but have not been successful.

“The other day a man walked by and also fell into the hole, but he wasn’t seriously injured.”

Charné says there are school children and other pedestrians walking on that sidewalk every day and they might sustain serious injuries.

The Addie contacted Ekurhuleni, but no comment has been received yet.
