Maths Olympiad ready for new takers

Mathematics teachers are now able to enter learners from Grade eight to 12 in the annual South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO).

The Olympiad was first held in 1966 and has been recognised by the national office for mathematics for the past 10 years.

Some of Springs’ high schools will also participate in the olympiad.

Springs Boys High say they normally enter every year and will definitely enter again.

Liddie Styger from Hoërskool Hugenote was happy to hear that entries are open again and says they will definitely enter a few students.

Participation in the SAMO programme ultimately prepares a learner for tertiary education.

The type of mathematical problems that participants are faced with during each round of this Olympiad is very similar to what can be expected at university level.

The first round of the SAMO will take place on March 12 at each individual school of which the duration will be one hour and the school can schedule its own time.

The first round parcels, consisting of the final instructions regarding round one, the question papers, answer sheets, solutions and certificates will be couriered as soon as the SAMO receives the school’s entry forms.

The entry fee is R24 per learner for schools and schools with more than 100 entrants can enter at a reduced fee of R20 per learner.

Schools and teachers who wish to enter can contact the SAMO on 012 392 9362 or send an email to info@samf.ac.za.

The entry form is also available online at www.samf.ac.za
