Residents of Gugulethu caught a suspect on Sunday at 6.50pm, for house robbery and theft.
Springs police received a complaint of a murder in progress in Phola Street.
Spokesman for the Springs police Captain Johannes Ramphora says when they arrived they found a man laying on the ground.
He was severely beaten, on the back of his head, by the community.
The community claim they caught the man because he robbed houses and allegedly stole items.
The paramedics treated the man on the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital.
Ramphora says the police opened a house robbery and theft case on the scene.
The man died of his injuries in hospital later during the night.
A case of murder was opened at the Springs Police Station.
No arrests have been made.
