Elderly folk are educated on healthy eating

The elderly people from various municipal retirement villages in Springs were treated to a awareness project at Pam Brink sport grounds on Tuesday.

The Department of Social Development of Springs held this awareness project on healthy eating habits and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Voluntary staff from Far East Rand Hospital (FERH) helped with this project.

Odette Hattingh and Dudu Simka from FERH are dietitians who explained the importance of certain foods and pointed out unhealthy foods.

Sister Thandi Sithole was also part of the project as well as Dawie Keyser, a paramedic from Trico Emergency Services.

The social workers at the event were Ashmika Mungul and Annerie Ferreira.

While the sitting was in process, one of the residents of Awendgloed, Willem Bronkhorst (75) struggled to breathe.

Dawie, who was also a volunteer taking part in the project, tended to him and gave him oxygen.
