Education department investigates racist allegations
The department will monitor developments at the school.
The Gauteng Department Education (GDE) is investigating an alleged racist incident that took place at Hoƫrskool Johan Jurgens.
Phumla Sekhonyane, spokesman of the GDE confirmed that there was an incident of alleged racism last week and because of the investigation could not give details about the incident.
She says the GDE views these alleged incidents in a very serious light.
“We have dispatched a team of senior officials to the school to investigate and the findings will determine the correct action to be taken against the learners involved,” says Sekhonyane.
She assured that the department will monitor developments at the school to ensure that this matter is addressed accordingly.
She says as the GDE remains committed to creating a school environment that is free from any form of racism and discrimination.
On Monday Sekhonyane confirmed that the investigators visited the school and promised to give feedback soon, which we had not received at the time of going to print.
After several calls to the school the principal, Danie van Wyk, who refused to talk to the Addie, said through a secretary that all media inquiries had to go through Sekhonyane.
