Pensioners say they have had enough

Residents of Edelweiss Gardens say they have had enough with trouble makers.

Leslie Wallace (68), caretaker of the complex, says they are being plagued by people who allegedly drink and smoke dagga in the park next to them.

“These people sit at a concrete table a few meters away from our wall, drinking into the early hours of the morning,” says Wallace.

He adds that they can also smell the dagga the people are smoking.

“They even throw their empty liquor bottles over our walls, onto our roofs and into our gardens.

“My grandchildren often come to visit me and what if they’re playing outside one day and a bottle hits them on the head?”

Wallace says that most of the residents who reside there are pensioners and are fuming with the way these people behave, but feel their hands are tied as they cannot do anything about the situation.

“I’ve lived here for about 20 years and have never had this problem before, it used to be a peaceful place where you can take your grandchildren to play in the park while taking a walk, but not anymore.

“The park is littered with broken pieces of glass and other rubbish,” he says.

He adds that the residents want this table removed as they feel it is what attracts the trouble makers.

“We are very serious now, we want this table to be removed.”

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for Ekurhuleni says investigations were carried out at the park and it was discovered that the table in question is not close to the wall but is a small concrete table that is part of the park furniture which has been installed.

“Investigations also revealed that the park was empty with no visitors and the grass at the park is cut once a month with the grass in Edelweiss scheduled to be cut before the end of March,” says Gadebe.

He adds that residents are encouraged to call the police and report the matter when they are threatened by those who use the park.
