GDE spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane couldn’t confirm whether any parents slept over at the schools the night before to ensure their children were enrolled, but says a high number of parents queued early at Selcourt Primary School and Springs Girls’ High School (SGHS)
All of these parents were attended to when registrations opened at 8am.
Springs police were called to SGHS, after parents were allegedly arguing about numbers given to them by registration staff.
Sekhonyane claims there were no fighting amongst parents at the school, and that the police arrived just to monitor the situation.
Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says they received a call for assistance at the school, but couldn’t confirm if the call was from the school.
“When police arrived at the school, they found some of the parents were arguing and it was dealt with in an orderly manner, and the problem was solved,” she says.
Sekhonyane says they are not aware of any other schools in Springs facing any registration problems and everything is running smoothly.
The department is currently using manual registrations as the on-line registrations have been experiencing some technical problems.
It is hoped that this will be resolved soon.
“We are anticipating positive results at the end of the admission period on May 26,” concludes Sekhonyane.
