Gert (20) and Monique (21) Fourie are devastated over the death of their three-month-old son Gert.
Monique says it was the infant’s first day at creche in Springs and also his last.
It wasn’t long after he was taken to his class that she was called and told something was wrong.
When she saw Gert, blood was coming from his nose and he was already cold.
It is unclear whether the baby was already dead at this stage but Monique’s immediate reaction was to try cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Gert.
When that didn’t work she rushed the child to a doctor’s room in Springs, where she claims the two doctors also tried to resuscitate her baby.
“It was a shock when they informed me that my baby is dead,” says Monique.
Gert says he cannot explain the pain he felt when he saw his wife at the doctor’s rooms, not to mention what he experienced when he saw his son.
Gert says his son was such a lively and happy child.
He was such a strong little boy and although he was teething, he didn’t give his parents any problems.
“We believe our son is with God because He has better plans for him,” says Gert.
The two of them were given the opportunity to stay with their son until the ambulance and the Springs police arrived.
Gert Fourie (71), the infant’s great grandfather says the hardest thing to do is to deal with a child’s death.
For a short while he knew his grandson and will miss him terribly.
The pathologists still need to determine the cause of death.
But for the time being, the family have many unanswered questions.
