The resident and his family had arrived at their Walnut Street home at about 7pm and stopped the vehicle – a maroon VW Jetta – in front of the garage, when a man armed with a gun knocked on the car window.
Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the hijacker ordered the family to get out of the vehicle.
It was then that they saw four other men, two of whom were armed with knives.
The men searched the driver and his wife, and took R200 in cash, but didn’t take the couple’s cellphones.
The five men got into the vehicle and drove off.
No shots were fired.
