Local public pools remain closed

Springs swimmers will suffer again this summer due to the Olympia Park Swimming Pool remaining closed.

The budget for the renovations is still to be requested and approved.

In an article featured in the Addie’s February 6 edition, ‘Olympia Park Swimming Pool will get facelift’, the metro reported the pool will be revamped after it became clear that general maintenance of the pool was no longer sustainable.

According to Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, certain processes have to be followed and the renovations to the pool have not yet been authorised.

The metro apologised for the closure of the pool and gave the assurance that overhauling the facility is the best permanent solution

Gadebe says they know the community is inconvenienced by the state of the pool.

He claims contractors are currently working at the Selection Park Swimming Pool to restore it.

“According to the plans and schedule, the work is right on course,” he says.

Gadebe says due to limited funding in 2014/15 financial year, the two swimming pools will only be completed in the 2015/16 year.

Whether the pool will be open to the public soon is a question posed to the metro by the Addie, and comment is awaited.
