Great expectations for summer 2016

If all goes according to plan, the Selection Park Swimming Pool should be open in time for residents to utilise next summer.

The Selection Park Swimming Pool is being upgraded and refurbished.

Contractors deployed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality started work at the pool in August and are planning to have the work completed by July 31, next year.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the pool will be upgraded and refurbished to be fully functional.

All buildings and ablution facilities will be fully refurbished, the pool will be sealed and re-tiled, and the filtration and chemical dozing plant will be replaced, including most of the pipes.

Gadebe says when the work is complete, the life span of the pool should be extended by another 30 to 50 years.

The metro anticipates the pool will be officially opened on September 1, 2016.

Gadebe says the metro’s challenge was not vandalism at the pool, but the ageing of the facility.

They are, however, planning to safeguard the pool by deploying full-time security.

As far as the Olympia Park Pool is concerned, the metro says it will be refurbished in two phases.

The first phase will make it functional by replacing the filtration, piping and chemical dozing plant.

“It is anticipated that it will be opened to the public during the 2016/17 swimming season,” adds Gadebe.
