If not, the Ekurhuleni Metro is asking you to start being considerate and to take responsibility for the cleanliness of your neighbourhood.
On October 24, the mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, will unveil the Clean City programme, which is aimed at eliminating illegal dumping, littering and rodent infestation.
The metro will rope in the youth of communities for the Clean City campaign.
The eight-month long campaign, themed ”A Cleaner and Greener Ekurhuleni Starts with You”, aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Eliminate illegal dumping.
- Reduce rodent infestation in premises to 30% or less.
- Conduct education and awareness activities in communities on environmental issues.
- Ensure by-law enforcement on matters regarding the environment.
On the day of the launch, at Tsakane Stadium, community members will be introduced to the city’s new green brigade, consisting of 5 000 recruits.
Over the duration of the programme they will spread across the city to eradicate heaps of dirt lying around as a result of illegal dumping, sweep the streets, cut grass, plant trees and conduct educational talks in their communities.
They will also clean water bodies such as lakes, dams and pans, beautify township entrances, and educate citizens on municipal by-laws which focus on environmental issues.
