A day for the kids

Hi5Kids Recovery Unit's Fun Day on Saturday was not as busy as the organisers would have liked, but this has not deterred them from planning future fun days in the future.

The founder of the organisation, Barries Barnard, says the fund-raising project, which was held at Stable Inn, involved a lot of people and organisations.

Hi5Kids are volunteers for the Springs and KwaThema Child Welfare Society, who also supported the event.

The organisation stands to raise awareness about child abuse, and Barries and every member of the organisation all dedicate their time to search for missing children and take up matters affecting children.

Local artist Sharoney Viljoen says she is grateful for the opportunity to invite her friends to entertain the community.

She invited several musicians to the event including Wian Fourie, Andries-Hendrik Potgieter, Morne van die Sandt, Zane Beswick, Mac Young, Jorine Rich and Leo van Zyl to perform on the day.

Markus van Aswegen (3) enjoyed the pedal cars under the watchful eye of his mother Elanda van Aswegen.

Lungile Shabangu (11) says her father, Ekurhuleni Metro councillor Shadow Shabangu, accompanied her to the event.

“The trampoline is fun,” she says.

The event ended with a gala evening where Lueryn van Niekerk (19) was crowned the new senior Miss Springs 2015.

Miné van Vuuren was the first princess and Simoné du Toit was the second princess.

Brando Riekert was crowned the new senior Mr Springs 2015 with Hendrik Burger in second place followed by Dawie van Staden.

In the 14 to 17 years old girls category, first place went to Natashe Beukes, with Cassey de Wit in second place and Channay Rossi third.

Edrich Aucamp was crowned Mr Springs 2015 in the 14 to 17 years old category.

His brother Wernich Aucamp took third place with Kendon Steel in second place.

The winner of Mr Springs in the three to 13 years old category was Evan Krause.

Keagen Verwey was second and Fernando Moller third.

Jolene Horn was crowned Miss Springs in the 10 to 13 years old category.

Her first princess is Megan Kruger and Gabi Cameron is the second princess.

The winner of the Miss Springs in the eight to nine years old category was Natasha Prinsloo, with Allissa Botha in second place and Amy Potgieter third.

Karla Botha won the Miss Springs 2015 in the three to seven years old category.

Mobore Thosago was crowned second princess and Lumé Vollgraaff first princess.

Vernadette Lourens, organiser of the Mr and Miss Springs event, says her organisation will assist Hi5Kids with their marketing strategy and fund-raising events.

“It is important to focus more on natural beauty and personality which compliment each other,” she says.

“Beauty can be used to get involved in charity work”.
