Metro picks at litter

Following the complaint from Selpark business owner, Jean Anderson (40), about the state of the pollution in which his businesses operates under, as well as the lack of effective service delivery (April 28), the Ekurhuleni Metro has given a response.

Themba Gadebe, the Ekurhuleni spokesman, explained that the metro does have daily litter pickers who are responsible for cleaning the sidewalks in front of the businesses on Oppenheimer Circle, Selpark.

He does, however, add that the jurisdiction of the litter pickers ends there.

“The litter picker (who comes at least once a week) is only responsible for cleaning the sidewalks, not the parks,” says Gadebe.

“Metro Parks is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of all parks.”

He further adds that the Metro is aware of the state of the parks and is looking into more effective measures to ensure optimum service delivery.

“Ekurhuleni did receive complaints about the state of the parks, but not about the litter-picking,” says Gadebe.

Gadebe gave assurance that there is a supervisor who monitors the litter-picking services in Springs, and does so on a daily basis.
