UPDATE: Vischkuil man gets R5 000 bail
Springs businessman arrested by Hawks is out on bail.
A local businessman briefly appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
He was granted bail of R5 000 and the case was postponed to September 28.
The 56-year-old man was arrested by the Gauteng Hawks National Bureau of Illegal Firearms Control and Priority Violent Crimes (NBIFCPVC) on Tuesday.
He is facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, explosives, and contravention of Firearms Control Act 60 of 200.
According to Hawks acting head Lt Gen Yolisa Matakata: “The arrest follows a five month investigation after the Hawks received information about a suspect who was allegedly in possession of suspected illegal firearms and ammunition.”
The seized goods were found in Fourth Street, Vischkuil on Tuesday.
During the search the Hawks, in conjunction with the Springs police, SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit and SAPS K9 Dog Unit, seized 16 shotguns, a revolver, 1.5 million rounds of ammunition, different kinds of explosives, signal fairs, hand grenades and electronic detonators.
“It was a proud moment for Matakata who congratulated the teams involved,” Matakata says.
“Gauteng is not a haven for arms caches and we would to warn anyone that the Hawks are watching you.”
