Wrap your dog when it gets anxious
The raining season is almost here and with the delightful rainfall, more often than not, thunder and lighting is present.
Many residents who own a dog may be faced with a difficult challenge when thunder booms in the overcast sky… their fur babies cowering in a corner.
Dogs are overly sensitive to loud noises, especially thunder and fireworks.
There are many ways to calm your dog during, and before, this time.
Some of the possibilities are:
• Giving sedatives,
• Playing calming music,
• Keeping doors and windows closed,
• Tiring them out with a walk or play and,
• Setting up a ‘safe haven’ in the corner of a room.
There is another possibility that may make your dog feel more comfortable during a storm, it is called the ‘anxiety wrap’.
This is a simple technique which requires no expenditure and can be done with a scarf, bandage or similar piece of cloth.
• Take the long piece of cloth.
• Wrap it around the front of your dog’s chest.
• Make a cross on the back.
• Bring the ends down to the end of the ribs.
• Cross the ends underneath and bring the ends back up to the dog’s back.
• Tie a knot next to the spine (not on the spine as this will be uncomfortable for your animal).
Leave the wrap on for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time when needed and remove.
If your dog does not like the wrap, take it off, but they should grow accustomed to it.
Do not make the wrap too tight, you should be able to get two fingers comfortably underneath the wrap.
