Seniors enjoy pantomime

Jill Levitas' last pantomime trip for 2017.

A group of people, including children from The Potters Haven, enjoyed a trip to the Joburg Theatre for a pantomime.

Jill Levitas once again organised the transport, tickets and breakfast for the group.

Pinocchio the pantomime was the last production she organised for 2017.

The loud, funny and more than a little crazy show was enjoyed by the children who had front row seats.

It was a blessing in disguise when one of the dancers left the stage to dance with one of the children from the foster home.

Marlene Minnie, the founder of the haven, says it was a memory forever engraved in this seven-year-old child’s mind.

“This year’s pantomime was fresh, energetic and very entertaining,” says Jill.

She has a passion for people, especially the senior citizens.

“They are often lonely and are in need of friendship and fellowship and that is exactly what they get on these outings,” says Jill.

An ex-Springs family formed the Ichikowitz Trust, who sponsored the recent trip by giving the group the comfort of a luxury 60-seater bus and a delicious breakfast.

One of the regular visitors to these shows, Jean Blakemore, says they are indebted to the family for their kindness.

“The meal was a wonderful gesture and thoroughly enjoyed by all,” says Jill.

Organising these trips to musicals, ballets, ice shows and pantomimes for the past seven years has been part of her daily routine.

She organises about 12 shows per year, which is a mammoth task, but it brings joy to her life when she can help others.

The next ice show, Cinderella on Ice, will take place on January 6.

Jill books the shows well in advance as this ensures that the best seats available are booked for some of the people with disabilities.

“Seeing their happy faces at the end of a trip is most rewarding and satisfying,” she says.

Another huge task is to get sponsors to pay for the buses to enable the seniors to afford the ticket for the relevant show.

She books shows well in advance and has already booked several events

for 2016 as this ensures that the best seats available are booked for

some of the people with disabilities.
