The school took up the challenge and Itumeleng Mokoena appeared for the applicant and Sandile Mhlambi appeared for the respondent.

Learners were given a hypothetical case and asked to:

• Correctly identify the parties involved as applicant or respondent;

• Identify the issues raised;

• Indicate which schedules confirm the argument; and

• Indicate which Constitutional rights have been infringed.

Team SBHS was promoted to the provincial rounds of the competition where the team appeared as counsel for both the applicant and respondent in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

The panel of adjudicators consisted of attorneys, advocates and magistrates. Although SBHS were not promoted to the national rounds, the team received praise from the magistrate who stated that she “could not fault the learners on

their argument”.
