Graves desecrated at Geduld Cemetery

Most disturbingly, it is both the headstones and the ashes that are missing.

Graves at the Geduld Cemetery are being vandalised by unknown people.

The cemetery, which is one of the oldest in Springs, is in a bad condition with graves missing their headstones.

In particular, the graves that appear to have been targeted are those which carry the remains of those who were cremated.

Most disturbingly, it is both the headstones and the ashes that are missing.

At present, it is still unclear what the tombstones and ashes are used for.

When The Addie visited the cemetery last Wednesday, it was obvious there was no security on site.

There was also evidence of people living at the cemetery in the abandoned house-like structure.

Although the grass was cut, the cemetery was full of litter and dog feaces.

Councillor Lorna Beharie was heartbroken by the vandalism she saw at the cemetery.

“Seeing ashes of deceased people lying exposed was a terrible sight.

“These are people and in death they still deserve dignity.

“These were once parents, brothers sisters and children and their headstones have been stolen and then the vandals rummage through their remains.

“It is morally reprehensible.

“There was even evidence of people living in the cemetery. I appeal to the municipality to put measures in place to prevent any further vandalism and cover the exposed remains and the local community to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities,” says Beharie.

Beharie continued to say that it would be best if the metro demolished the house-like structure.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication, but The Addie will follow up with their response.
