Deputy director: programmes Emily Mawela says, “We launched this programme to encourage voluntary male medical circumcision.
“It is a measure used to reduce exposure to HIV infection,” says Mawela.
The programme had its first patient today who appeared to be calm and relaxed before his procedure. Circumcision will be available every Tuesday until December 18, and will then close for two weeks and will re-open again in January.
To book your slot, patients are encouraged to call Yvonne Ndlovu on 011 812 8448, or Sammy Sapie on 081 312 8986 or Emily Mawela on 082 855 4373. The procedure, including pre- and post counselling, health screening and the snip, takes 30-45 minutes and patients are allowed to have a light meal beforehand.
It takes seven days for the wounds to close and patients are encouraged to come back after three days for a check-up.
