Informative yoga session at Senior Citizen Centre
“These sessions are very uplifting and you really feel like you’ve had some good exercise afterwards.”
Elderly citizens from the Seniors Citizens Centre gathered in the main hall for their weekly session with yoga teacher Vijay Singh on Friday afternoon.
The elders engaged in stretching and breathing exercises.
For joint pain, Singh guided them through basic arm, leg, hip, shoulder and neck rotation exercises.
Singh also helped them with more challenging stretching exercises, walking around the group and making sure that everyone was performing the exercises correctly.

After the stretches, Singh took them through various breathing exercises which he says can help them deal with feelings of anxiety, anger and stress, as well as improve circulation.
Singh says: “Yoga is not just for physical exercise and physical benefits, it is more useful in gaining resilience and oneness with yourself, that you can experience in your day-to-day life which will make you more content and at peace, especially with breathing.”
The elders appeared invigorated and relaxed after the session.
One of the participants, Gene Blakemore, says: “These sessions are very uplifting and you really feel like you’ve had some good exercise afterwards.
“I encourage everyone to try and do these exercises; it’s not about looking slim or fit but about peace of mind and controlling your emotions.”
