Casseldale store closed, much to the dismay of residents
It was no longer viable for the store to operate in the area.
Residents were shocked last week when the popular SPAR in Casseldale closed abruptly last week.
For many, the store was convenient as it was just around the corner from home and on their way to work.
The store has been permanently shut down, according to Gary North, a senior retail operations manager in the eastern region.
According to North, it was no longer viable to operate in the area.

When asked if the business shut down due to the owner of the store being in debt to the amount of R14-million, North said, “As an independently owned and run business we cannot confirm any such allegations.”
Additionally, North went on to say the staff were given a notice.
“Alistair Hans (owner of the store) is in the process of business liquidation, and is finalising all required retrenchment packages for the staff.”
Speaking to claims each staff member was given a bag of groceries instead of being paid, Hans says the perishable goods given to staff was not part of their retrenchment package.
H says due to the store closing, the food would go off and it was thus given to the staff who could use it.
Some food was also donated to various causes.
Contrary to rumours going around, it is not Hans who died last week, but the owner of the building.
