Kwa-Thema Police Station reopens after decontamination

The Kwa-Thema police station was closed, decontaminated and has been reopened.

Kwa-Thema Police Station was closed temporarily after one of its staff tested positive for Covid-19.

Brian Sithole of One Strong Voice Foundation says they received a report that a woman who had gone to the police station on Saturday night found that the main building was closed.

“She was going to report a case of domestic violence, but she ended up going back home without getting any help,” says Sithole.

He says his team went to the station on Sunday morning to find that it was still closed.

“This time, police officers were working from the parking area.”

Col Noxolo Kweza, Gauteng SAPS provincial spokesperson, confirms an officer from Kwa-Thema Police Station received their results on Saturday.

“A team moved into the detective unit’s conference room on Saturday and decontamination began on the same day.”

Kweza says while the building was closed, officers continued to serve the public from different parts of the premises.

“Our concern is that other officers could have been infected.

“What about all the members of the public who were exposed to the officer?

“We are grateful that they are determined to serve the public, but this is also risky.

“We believe the station should have been closed and none of the officers working until everyone who works at the station was tested,” says Sithole.

Kwa-Thema Police Station has reopened and has been operating since Sunday afternoon.
