Markville lifts to be installed by the end of the year

Metro responds to Markville flats story

In response to an article titled ‘Markville residents still without a lift’, divisional head of communications and media relations, Nhlanhla Cebekhulu gives the following statement:

“The tender was finalised in February this year and the City of Ekurhuleni appointed two contractors to install new lifts at Markville Flats, Silverkroon Flats, Andries Srcibante Flats, Deneys Conradie, Pauline Davis, Tweedy Park, Karachi Court, Delhi Court and Roxanna Mansions.”

He adds that: “The project commenced in February.

“Lifts have been procured from abroad and the Human Settlements Department expects delivery by the end of August.

“Installation of lifts will start as soon as contractors receive delivery of lifts.”

Cebekhulu says there was a delay in delivering of steel due to Covid-19, but that the city expects a delivery of the first batch by the end of this month and second batch by August.

He goes to on to say that: “The project budget was approved by the City, hence contractors are appointed to commence with the installation.

“Works commenced in February 2020 and contractors are preparing all sites (including Markville flats) for the installation of the lifts.”

In an email sent to former Springs mayor, Gert Parsons (who is heavily involved with Markville), project manager Phumzile Nyatlo says: “Kindly note that lifts are procured from abroad as there are no lift manufacturing companies in South Africa.

“The lifts are at 40 per cent manufacturing.

“The first batch (for Musan Trading) should arrive end of July.

“The second batch for Ngaatendwe should arrive mid August.

“We were delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown.”
