Snyman steps into new role as Springs Striders secretary

Chelle-Marie Snyman has gone from participating in Tuesday time trials to taking on a leadership role at Springs Striders.

Springs Striders Athletics Club recently appointed its new secretary, Chelle-Marie Snyman. Snyman’s journey in the club began with running in its Tuesday time trials. She began to enjoy the friendly atmosphere, the people and the friendships that came with it.

Through her involvement, she realised that a running club involves more than just running. Behind the scenes, members dedicate their time and effort to keeping the club going and she is now among those contributing.

“The more I got involved, the more I realised what a special club Springs Striders is, and I’m really happy to now be part of it in a different way,” she said.

She recalled the moment she received the news about her appointment.

“I was excited but also a little nervous. It’s a big responsibility and I knew there would be a lot for me to learn.

“But I’m also someone who loves a challenge. It means a lot to me that people have put their trust in me to take on this role,” she said.

Her new responsibilities include helping with the club’s administration, communication, meetings and making sure things run as smoothly as possible.

“I’m also very involved in the planning of our 2027 marathon, especially with sponsorships and organising everything behind the scenes. There is definitely a lot more work involved than people realise,” she explained.

Snyman highlighted how going from being a runner to a member of the team has opened her eyes to the work being done behind the scenes.

“I’m still learning every day and I’m definitely not afraid to ask questions. I’ve also learnt that teamwork is everything and that you can’t do it all on your own,” she said.

Snyman hopes to see the club continue to grow, not just as a running club but as a family.

“I want people to feel welcome, whether they’re running their first 5 km or training for Comrades. I hope we can attract new members, support our current runners and keep the wonderful spirit of the club alive,” she said warmly.

She also said she would like to see growth in the club’s social media engagement and getting more people to join.

“One of the biggest things we’re currently working on is our first 42.2 km marathon in January 2027. After 56 years of our well-known 32 km race, this is a huge step for Springs Striders.

“It’s exciting, stressful and a lot of hard work, but I really want to help make it something special,” Snyman said.

She thanked everyone who has welcomed and supported her as she finds her feet in the new role.

“I want everyone to know that I’m approachable and if you have ideas or suggestions, please share them. At the end of the day, we all want what’s best for our club.

“To the Springs community, come join us! You don’t have to be the fastest runner or have years of experience. We all start somewhere. I’m excited for what lies ahead, and I hope we can make some amazing memories together,” she said.
