Getting to know Mariska Wolmarans

“I’ve always wanted to dance, from the moment I started walking,” said Wolmarans.

Dance teacher Mariska Wolmarans is the owner of Dance Directions and aims to share her passion for dancing with others.

How did you start dancing?
I’ve always wanted to dance, from the moment I started walking.
It’s a great passion of mine and it’s what I’ve always wanted to do with my life.
I started dancing with Nicole’s World of Dance at 18 and I’ve been dancing for 17 years now.
Even as a child, I didn’t do a lot of sport, only hockey.
Dancing has always been my thing.

Where does your love for dancing come from?
I just grew up with a passion for dancing.
There’s nobody in my family that I take after, it’s just me.
My favourite dance style is hip-hop and salsa.

When did you decide to open your own dance studio?
I was with Nicole’s World of Dance for six years and in 2011/2012, I decided it was time to be on my own and follow my own dream.
I like teaching, but I have more passion for being a professional dancer and doing shows.
I was very lucky that my parents supported me in realising my dream and I’ve grown from there.
One day I hope to have my own dance studio space because at the moment I’m renting the space we dance in.

Has being a dancer made you a better dance teacher?
Yes, it really does.
You learn from others, whether you’re teaching them or performing with them on stage.
As a teacher, I’m able to prepare my students better for competitions and how to handle the pressure as I know what it’s like to be on stage and have judges watching you.

What has been the highlight of your dance career?
There’s a lot, as I’ve been a part of a lot of gigs.
One that stands out is being part of a flash mob for the Lions Rugby Club, that was so much fun.
I still have so much I want to do and definitely want to push myself and dance beyond stage and do big shows before I get too old.

What do you do when you’re not on the dance floor?
I love staying fit, so anything that will help me do that.
I do CrossFit and used to do aerial yoga.
I like keeping myself busy by staying active.
