Operation Okea Molao yields results in Springs

The Paul Kruger Highway was an obstacle course for those evading the long arm of the law.

The SAPS, in partnership with the EMPD and other stakeholders, staged a roadblock as part of Operation Okae Molao last Thursday.
The Paul Kruger Highway was an obstacle course for those evading the long arm of the law.

Brig Thembeka Gwebushe, Springs SAPS station commander; Brig Nkhensani Lemba, Ekurhuleni district SAPS, and Arles Baloyi, chairperson of Wright Park CPF, believe that crime eradication is the responsibility of the whole community.

“This is a multi-discipline operation. Our partners are the community forums, Gauteng Traffic Police, Department of Home Affairs, security companies and others.
“We are focusing on crime prevention and non-proliferation of firearms.
“The roadblock will allow us to do stop-and-searches.
“We are looking for drugs, and just seeing if people are complying with the law,” explained Brig Nkhensani Lemba from Ekurhuleni District SAPS.

Some motorists received traffic fines after their vehicles were checked during the roadblock on Paul Kruger Highway on Thursday.

Out of 430 dockets dealt with during the operation, which started on Wednesday, 205 suspects were identified.
More than 60 were arrested for assault, 17 were related to domestic violence issues, 21 for theft, 21 for malicious damage to property, 13 for fraud, 12 for rape, nine for warrants of arrest and four for possession of stolen motor vehicles.

“The Department of Home Affairs is helping us to identify illegal immigrants,” Lemba added.
In Springs and Ivory Park, 16 illegal immigrants were arrested.
Some face additional charges of possession of railway equipment, possession of drugs, dealing in drugs and selling liquor without a licence.

Officers also used the opportunity to raise awareness of the recent increase in hijackings in the area.

“The police cannot fight crime on their own. There are just not enough of us.
“The community needs to commit to ensuring that the law is upheld at all times,” said Lemba.
Detectives further recovered 1 842 Mandrax tablets in separate incidents.
Ekurhuleni district commissioner Maj-Gen Anna Mateisi commended the teams for their contribution to the fight against crime and their eagerness to bring those who are responsible for wrongdoing to book.
