Springs residents pay tribute to the great actor

Legendary South African actor and director Clive Scott (84) died on July 28. Scott was born in Johannesburg in 1937 and spent some of his formative school years in Springs.

He attended Springs West School and his family lived on Nigel Road. Scott worked as a banker for two years before moving to England to pursue a career in acting.

He learnt the ropes of acting at Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art before performing regularly at the Mousetrap Theatre in London.

After his stint in theatre, Scott brought joy to countless people with iconic roles in internationally acclaimed films and television shows.

The actor’s charisma and unique talents saw him reprise roles in The Villagers and Isidingo, where his comedic skills brought laughter to many households.

He also helped bring iconic South African stories such as Beat the Drum, Duma, and Winnie Mandela to the big screen.

Tributes poured in for Scott on various social media platforms, where fans expressed the impact his performances had on their lives, as well as real encounters with the actor. Scott’s daughter, Gudrun Scott Cleghorn, shared the news in a Facebook post.

“Clive, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, met archangel Azrael at 14:30 today, surrounded by the love and light of loved ones who had died before him.

“Our hearts are broken and our lives will never be the same again. He touched so many lives and was loved by so many.

“A truly remarkable life lived. My brothers, Tom, Luke, Lufuno, and I are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and for the exceptional care our father experienced in the last moments of his life,” wrote Cleghorn.
