Possible personal info breach at licensing department

“The matter will be further investigated to ensure that such incidents do not re-occur.”

A Springs resident was concerned when he found copies of other people’s documents from the Ekurhuleni Licence Department on Friday.
The man, who wishes not to be named for fear of victimisation, claims that he went to the department in Springs to renew licences for a number of his vehicles.
“The consultant made copies of some of the forms I needed to fill in, and I took some home with me.
“When I eventually started filling them in, I noticed copies of other people’s identity documents on the back of the forms.
“My main concern is what will happen to my personal documents now. What is if they land in the hands of a person who may use them for something illegal?” he said.

When asked if there were any shortages on the official forms used at the licensing department, the City of Ekurhuleni said there are delays in acquiring the necessary application forms and A4 papers.
“The matter is receiving attention to enhance services,” added Zweli Dlamini, the City’s spokesperson.
He also said that scrap paper is only used internally.
Dlamini explained that the man received forms, not copies.
“It is not clear why he claimed that he was given photocopied forms,” he said.
He insisted that scrap paper is not meant to be used by the public.

When Dlamini was asked if the municipality was denying that the incident took place, he said “the metro is not denying anything but rather stipulating standard procedure. We do not expect employees to expose customers’ details because they have all signed a confidentiality agreement before they could be introduced to the system (eNatis).
“The matter will be further investigated to ensure that such incidents do not re-occur.”
