FOLLOW-UP: New Bakerton Library nearing completion after years of delays

After years of waiting, the upgraded Bakerton Library has reached its final stage, although the City of Ekurhuleni has not yet confirmed an official opening date.

The long-awaited Bakerton Library in Springs is nearing its opening, with the City of Ekurhuleni confirming that all major construction work has been completed.

The opening date has not yet been confirmed.

The library, situated at 58 First Avenue in Bakerton, has undergone upgrades and extensions to give residents greater access to educational resources, digital services and modern learning spaces.

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the project is now in its final stages.

The development includes a double-storey extension that connects to the existing community centre, as well as a new reception area intended to improve the flow of visitors.

He explained that the original library will also remain part of the community’s facilities.

“The original, smaller library building was set aside to be repurposed to continue serving the community through libraries and arts and culture programmes,” said Dlamini.

Once operational, the new facility will offer physical books and e-books, public access computers, free Wi-Fi and dedicated study areas.

Dlamini said the library would also provide programmes aimed at improving literacy and digital skills among residents.

These will include story hours, book clubs, the Ekurhuleni Libraries’ CISCO Networking Academy, Gogos Go Digital and coding programmes for primary school learners.

The facility is also expected to provide practical support to residents looking for employment opportunities.

Dlamini indicated that residents will be able to use the computers and internet to draft CVs, apply for jobs and access important online services, while learners and students will have access to resources for research and assignments.

The upgrades come after the Bakerton community waited several years for the project to be completed.

With the major construction now complete, Dlamini shared that the city is focusing on the final work required before the facility can be opened.

“The new Bakerton Library represents an important investment in literacy, digital inclusion, skills development and access to opportunities for residents of Bakerton and surrounding areas,” he said.
