Police warn public to be vigilant about buying goods on social media
“It is so easy for a person to take a photo of an item and claim they own it. “

The Springs SAPS warned the public from buying goods advertised on social media.
“It is so easy for a person to take a photo of an item and claim they own it.
“But the potential seller really needs to verify if it is truly theirs,” explained Capt Johannes Ramphora, communications officer of Springs SAPS.
The station has received a number of complaints where a buyer would transfer money to a seller after seeing items advertised on social media platforms.

“In some cases we find that the seller closed the bank account soon after the buyer transfered the money,” he added.
Ramphora encouraged prospective buyers to meet with and verify the identity of the buyers before sending them any money.
“Ask for their full details and inspect the item. If you have any doubt, do not go through with the transaction,” he said.
