Impact Tuition Learning Centre learners participated in a debate competition on August 20 at Thandimfundo Academy in Brakpan, where they produced impressive results.

The learners achieved first place in the junior primary category and second place in the senior primary category after competing with Buckingham Academy, Excel Edu Centre, Sandspring International Academy and the host school.

Impact Tuition founder Bernard Meda expressed his pride in the learners’ performance, highlighting their determination.

“The learners represented the school with commitment, confidence and professionalism throughout the competition,” he said.

Meda described how the competition titled ‘The Great Debate’ was an opportunity for schools to showcase their learners’ public speaking, critical thinking, research, confidence, teamwork and ability to defend different viewpoints constructively.

“It was challenging because our learners had to debate against strong teams from different schools and respond to a variety of topics.

“They were also required to think quickly, present well-structured arguments and remain confident under pressure,” Meda said.

He added that the strict speaking times added another challenge as learners had to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively within a limited period.

The learners debated a range of relevant and thought-provoking topics.

Junior and intermediate primary learners tackled questions such as whether homework should be banned, school uniforms should be compulsory, extra-mural activities should be mandatory and phones should be allowed in schools.

Senior primary learners debated whether artificial intelligence is taking over people’s jobs, whether littering should carry harsher penalties, whether school holidays should be allowed and whether humans use too much technology.

Meda said the learners’ confidence and ability to think critically is what stood out the most.

“They demonstrated that they could listen to opposing views, formulate arguments and present their opinions respectfully and convincingly,” he said.

“These results reflect the hard work, dedication, preparation and resilience of our learners, as well as the commitment of the teachers who supported and prepared them.

The achievement demonstrates that our learners are not only developing academically, but are also being equipped with important life skills such as communication, leadership, critical thinking, confidence and teamwork,” Meda concluded.
