An abandoned mine shaft covered in long grass has proven to be a haven for criminal elements, according to Paul Krugersoord residents.
Piet Fourie and his neighbours have been living with this problem for two years, and very little has been done by the metro, despite numerous calls.
“I phone them every week, and all we get is a reference number,” said Fourie.

According to Fourie, the grass has caused a spike in crime in the past two years, especially theft and house break-ins.
“We hear movement every night in this vicinity and our dogs start barking like crazy. We can’t see who they are barking at because of the tall grass and weeds,” he added.

The tall grass provides a hiding place for thieves.

Fourie said people have moved into the abandoned mine shaft.
