Springs residents get their hands dirty

Over 40 volunteers joined hands-on Saturday morning to clean the streets of the Springs CBD as part of the Team Up to Clean Up initiative.
The volunteers worked in groups and their efforts soon gained momentum as more people showed up to help.
They started on the corner of 5th and 8th avenues early in the morning and quickly made their way through the city.
Dozens of black bags were filled to the brim with refuse, and residents took them away by trailers.
By the end of the day, they had cleaned 5th to 7th streets. They even made their way to 12th Street and 9th Avenue.
“I am extremely happy with how it went. The turnout was incredible and everyone worked hard,” said ward councillor Charmaine Kock.
These parts of the city looked spotless by the end of the day and Kock hopes it can stay that way.

“I urged the businesses to keep their respective areas clean. I also warned the little supermarkets that I would enforce by-laws if they continued to dump in town.
“I approached residents and requested that they clean up any unkempt pavements or gardens,” she said.
Kock aims to expand this initiative to restore many of the historical sites around Springs that have fallen into ruin over the years.
This will include the war memorial and the windmill.
Kock hopes to also clean the old-age villages and many parks in Springs.
